Charlotte, NC has great terrain that’s perfect for motorcycle riding. We’ve outlined some of our favorite rides below so you can enjoy them too!

North Norman Loop

This motorcycle route takes riders over and across the northern parts of Lake Norman for some fantastic sights while riding fun roads — just remember to pack a lunch! Start by turning north onto Perth Road from NC-150 and take that to State Park Road, then to St. Johns Road, and then onto East Monbo Road. A few more quick changes, from Monbo Road to Pineville, and then Pineville to Buffalo Shoals. After crossing the Catawba River bridge, immediately turn onto Kale Road, then Long Island Road, and then back to Monbo until you hit Molly’s Backbone Road. The last stretch takes Molly’s Backbone to Sherills Ford Road and finally back to NC-150 for a completed loop!

That might sound like a lot of exits and turns, but you’ll be justly rewarded with amazing scenery and great views of Duke Power State Park, with several water crossings and plenty of rural farmland to keep you company. The roads are well maintained throughout the route, with gentle curves and plenty to look at. There’s not much in the way of amenities other than a few gas stations, but there are great opportunities to stop off for fishing, hiking, and camping. If you do get hungry, don’t worry, since the route isn’t too long and you’ll be back to civilization in no time!

Charlotte to Wilkesboro

This route takes riders up Highway 16 from Charlotte all the way up to Wilkesboro. Directions are relatively straightforward: simply follow the signs along Highway 16. You’ll have a choice to take a more scenic route filled with quaint small towns with nostalgic designs, or head straight to Wilkesboro. Maybe you’ll just be inspired to come back for another ride to see what you missed the first time around!

It’s said that Wilkesboro is the gateway to mountain country, and riding this route will show you why that’s the case. Once you top the hills, you’ll find breathtaking views that overlook the Blue Ridge Mountains. The road quality is good along the entire route, with a few bumpy exceptions in the more rural areas. Everything is well marked, so visitors to the region should find this an easy route to follow. Amenities are available throughout, with plenty of gas and rest stops, but also a few diamonds in the rough when it comes to restaurants and other attractions.
